I worked on the documentary on the making of MMBT as well as writing the
international press kit, and so lived with that film for every day of its
making.
Maybe had it been not so heavily recut to make it an "action movie" then
perhaps
Ebert's review might have been true.
What was planned and what emerged were quite different animals.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] A list of "classic" movies for you to see (this is a
VERY long post)!
When I read an Roger Ebert review and he said:
'"Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,'' not only the best of the three Mad Max
movies, but one of the best films of 1985'
I knew that I could never trust another word that came out of his mouth.
On this list, I never made it past "Shallow Hal". I should have stopped
when I realized that according to Bruce, there have only been 5 classic
films made in the new millennium. Sounds like he needs to get out more.
If you are looking for another interesting list -- check out the imdb top
lists on the left hand side of: http://imdb.com/chart
On a related note, did you ever notice that Poster collectors tend to like
movies better if they have good posters?

As many of you know, I have seen more movies than just about anyone you
will
ever meet! Here are a list of movies I truly consider "classic". I have
arranged
them by date (from most recent backwards) as I know many people have a
prejudice
against black and white movies in general and extreme prejudice against
silent
and subtitled movies, so this puts many of those lower on the list. The
next
time you are at the video store or on Netflix trying to decide what to
rent, I
hope you will consider one of these VERY worthy older choices, rather
than just
scanning the pretty mediocre "new releases".
Note that few current day movies (those of the past few years) are on my
list.
Partly this is because I think few quality ones were made in those years,
and
partly because it takes time to know if a film is really "classic". I
will say
that I think today's strong emphasis on special effects (and lack of
emphasis on
intelligent scripts) is a major factor in my lowered opinion of how many
classics are being made (and of course it may also somewhat reflect that
I am
simply getting older, and miss the "good old days"!).
What makes for a "classic" movie? To me, it is that the movie is a
classic OF
ITS KIND, far superior to similar movies of that type, or something that
is "in
a class by itself" (and is an excellent movie, to boot)! I would never
argue
that the below movies are the "best" movies ever made, so please don't
take this
list that way!
I know many of you will recognize lots of the "older titles" as being
"classics", but realize that there are lots of the titles you won't
recognize
that are also wonderful movies, but sadly have been largely forgotten,
except by
major film buffs, and they are just as good as many of the best
remembered older
titles! I welcome any suggestions of movies that deserve to be on this
list, but
are not!
Here is the list:
2004 SIDEWAYS
2002 MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING
2001 SHALLOW HAL
2001 SPIRITED AWAY
2000 O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU
1998 THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
1996 MARS ATTACKS
1996 SLING BLADE
1995 BABE ('95)
1995 ROB ROY ('95)
1995 TOY STORY
1994 EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN
EZ: Large list deleted
1921 ORPHANS OF THE STORM
1921 SHEIK
1916 CIVILIZATION
1915 BIRTH OF A NATION
1914 PERILS OF PAULINE ('14)
Note: If a movie has a year after the title, it is because there was one
or more
other versions of that movie in other years, and this let's you know
that, and
to be sure to get the correct version (for example, you don't want to
accidentally rent the awful "new" version of Planet of the Apes thinking
you are
getting the classic "original" version!)
