I think the problem is that this movie, like Citizen Kane, Children of Paradise
and Renoir's other great movie, Rules of the Game, are very "difficult" movies,
with lots to absorb, and lots that almost can't be comprehended in a single
viewing. I don't know one person who loves these four movies (or any of the
other similar excellent movies, like the best of Robert Altman) who says they
have seen them once and never again!
Movies like this are not very "lovable" and will never have the huge followings
of much "easier" great movies like Casablanca or Wizard of Oz, but to me that
doesn't make them any less "great", just "different".
