If I'm allowed to revisit this topic...
I finally got around to renting "The Howards of Virginia," and I
think it's an entertaining Revolutionary War era film. I'm not
convinced, however, that Cary Grant belongs in a historical film. I
think he may have cheated on his screen test.
I also like much of "1776," but I think the scenes involving John
Adams' wife are incredibly dull. I think the studio needs to come out
with a "Platinum Edition" DVD that removes all those scenes.

While flipping channels this Independence Day I ran across 1940's
"The Howards of Virginia" with Cary Grant and Martha Scott on
Turner Classic Movies. Not a bad look at the period leading up to
the Revolutionary War.
Both of these flicks would be considered GOOD in my book. :)

I don't know. I'll go out on a limb, though, and say that I
can't remember a really good film about the American Revolution.
There have been some bad ones. THE PATRIOT was certainly abysmal, a
cartoon
if there ever was one. REVOLUTION was pitiful. I think there
may have been some films set in the period which were OK. I liked
JOHNNY TREMAIN as a kid. I have not seen that in years.
Am I missing something?
