Hi Franc

Another seller who responded to my Blog suggested that it is not worthwhile selling anything below $30.00. One of the reasons I have asked the question is that I have a huge inventory of stock including a mountain of items that are worth under $10.00 with some in only average condition. I recently decided that I really should be getting rid of a lot of this stock so I will be dumping boxes of posters at the local tip over the next few months.

This really goes against the grain for me because over the years I have been a collector as well as a dealer and I find it very hard to get rid of anything at all but, ultimately, there is no point in paying storage fees to house stock that might sit there forever.

Other dealers have probably worked this out years ago but sometimes when you purchase a collection you need to take a mountain of junk to get some choice items. That usually results in hundreds of posters that are of low value which, from a business point of view, are better off dumped.

Regards
John

Hi John --- I just read your blog and I think it accurately reflects the
costs of selling on Ebay. For some, such as myself, there is also the
cost and time of marketing. I compile one or two e-mails per week to my
Ebay customers telling them of upcoming sales and I also produce flyers
that I enclose with each order and mail regularly to my Ebay customers.

Let us also not forget. The time involved in "negotiating" with Ebay
customers. I just love the Ebay customer who wins an auction on Ebay and
then proceeds to negotiate shipping costs and payment terms. There is no
end to the buyers who clearly don't understand that shipping, insurance
and packing materials cost real money. They are always trying to
renegotiate the method and manner of shipping. Most plead with me to
send their purchases by media mail, which in the US is reserved strictly
for books and which makes filing an insurance claim virtually
impossible, if one is shipping anything but books! I also find that some
buyers overextend themselves and try to negotiate when they will pay
you. I had one buyer who regularly provided me multiple stories about
how he had to pay his taxes, he was involved in an accident, his house
was blown away by a tornado etc. etc and in checking his summary of
purchases on Ebay I discovered an endless list of expensive
acquisitions. When the dealer extends credit to these deadbeats, the
dealer still has to pay Ebay its fees and commissions on time.

In order to cut down on costs, I try to limit my use of gallery
pictures, which really add to the cost. Of course I will then also get
endless e-mails from those Ebay browsers, who never buy anything,
complaining that they have to weed through all of my listings
individually! I also limit the reserves I place on items and I avoid all
of the Ebay extra items, as well.

I think when you consider the cost to the Ebay dealer of the above, it
does not become profitable to post anything on Ebay as an auction unless
the minimum selling price is $15.00. That's my floor.

Sincerely,

Franc Martarella

Subject: [MOPO] The Facts of Life for eBay Sellers

I have written a blog on what the break even price point would be for
eBay
sellers...

I would be interested in what you have to say.

From memory, Bruce has given a price point to his consignors (ie he will

only accept consignments of a certain value) but maybe he might have
some
thoughts on this.

This seller, ilikeposters76, did the same thing to me on this auction:

190130872014.

<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190130872014&;
ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=009>http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?View
Item&rd=1&item=190130872014&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=009

But, I never heard from the seller until after I filed my claim with
PayPal. With me, he tried to blackmail me into canceling the claim
against him by telling me he would neither send the poster nor a
refund
until I canceled the claim with PayPal. I told him he was in
violation
and that he was in no position to dictate the terms. I informed him
that
the only acceptable option was for him to refund my money in full,
because
at this point I didn't believe that he would have ever sent the
poster.
Upon receipt of a refund, then and only then would I cancel my claim
against him. He told me that he had canceled his PayPal account --
how
convenient for him -- and that the only way he could refund my payment
was
with a money order.

If you look at the description for the 40x60 poster by slyithewiper,
it is
almost identical in wording for the 40x60 posters that Doug and I
bought.
Even the photos were taken in the same way, different only by being
taken
on carpet for this latest 40x60.

What was odd about my transaction is that though the seller is named
Glenn
Boyd, the payments went to the email address for a Michael Bogdan, so
I
wonder if there is more than one dealer involved in all of this.
