Doug: As a resident 'nut' about Sound of Music -- reproduced below is a copy-and-paste list I use to advise collectors about the points and markers for roadshow one-sheets. This came about during my own search for a S.O.M. 'roadshow' one-sheet, having come across many commercial anniversary posters that looked stone mint and had almost ALL of the markers listed below -- including being 27 x 41 -- EXCEPT they were rolled. The short answer to your question is the roadshow poster MUST measure 27 x 41 on the dot and have the Todd-AO film process prominently displayed, not Cinemascope. No NSS numbers are present and the three road-shows I owned (kept one) -- ALL had a stamp on the back (see attached link) w/o an NSS number. The NSS numbers appeared on all post-roadshow advertising materials. http://tinyurl.com/2h4d2g Meanwhile...the list... Best, -koose. For 'The Sound of Music,' be on the lookout for the following EIGHT markers or issues which identify a roadshow poster from a later issue, of which many more were printed: 1. No National Screen Service (NSS) numbers or even the year 1965 are printed anywhere. NONE! Don't let anyone tell you different. The same holds true for roadshow lobby cards. NSS numbers were issued for 'The Sound of Music' AFTER its roadshow 'exclusive engagements' were finished. They were printed on posters and lobby cards intended to be displayed in secondary theaters. 2. The words 'Todd-AO' and 'Color by Deluxe' must be printed just right of center. Non-roadshow posters, or posters for theaters unable to accomodate the Todd-AO' film process (invented by Elizabeth Taylor's husband, Michael Todd), have the words, 'Cinemascope' printed on them; some even have these words sniped on a sticker and slapped over the words 'Todd-AO.' 3. NO MENTION is made about the five Oscars 'The Sound of Music' won in 1966 for films released in 1965. All subsequent one-sheets have the words, 'Winner of 5 Academy Awards' printed at the top! 4. The words, 'Litho in USA' must be printed in the lower right corner, directly beneath the art. 5. The poster must measure 27x41. Reprints, including anniversary posters that look like roadshow posters -- are rolled and printed on heavier stock. 6. The poster must be folded. 7. The poster must have a blank space that measures at least 3' in height from the bottom of the poster art DOWN to the poster's actual bottom edge. 8. And here's the kicker. Most don't realize the following because by the time they buy this title, the poster has been linen-backed: The following words must be printed on the back, consisting of an ink stamp: '1-sheet, Sound of Music, 27x41,' just like the scan. NO NSS number ANYWHERE. The NSS number appears only on NON-ROADSHOW advertising materials.
