The Heritage Vintage Movie Poster Signature Auction <http://movieposters.ha.com/common/auction/catalog.php?SaleNo=667&ic=auctionhome_catalog> is just a few days away, and I want to take this opportunity to point out a few more really cool pieces you might have overlooked.
Long before the advent of cable TV, the freak show was a part of the circus sideshow. For a modest fee, gawking onlookers could feast their eyes on such human oddities as armless and legless men and women, bearded ladies, dog-faced boys, giants, little people, and, of course, conjoined twins. Among the most popular of the so-called "Siamese twins" were the remarkable Daisy and Violet Hilton, beautiful young girls joined at the hips, who not only appeared in sideshows, but toured successfully in vaudeville, and even appeared in Tod Browning's landmark film, Freaks, in 1932, and in the semi-documentary, Chained for Life, in 1951. In this auction, you'll find a stunning, and very rare, poster from the Hilton twins' vaudeville run<http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?hdnJumpToLot=1&Sale_No=667&Lot_No=28525>, circa 1931, most likely printed just before their appearance in Freaks. Paper featuring these popular performers is always desirable, and this poster features a lovely image of the two girls. For all you James Bond completists, here's a piece you rarely see: the Esquire magazine promo poster for the Sean Connery thriller, You Only live Twice<http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667&hdnJumpToLot=1&Lot_No=28665>, from 1967. Esquire magazine produced these 40" x 60" posters, which featured their entire preview article on the picture, for both this movie and Thunderball. This one is particularly nice, as it not only pictures Connery as Bond and Donald Pleasance as Blofeld, but features risqué images of starlets Yee-Wah Yang and Yasuko Nagazumi, who played bath girls in the movie, as well as Bond girls Mie Hama (Kissy Suzuki) and Akiko Wakabayashi (Aki). The copy offered in this auction has never been folded, and is in pristine condition. There's a great assortment of midget window cards in this auction, many of them from the collection of Denver Sherry. For years, Sherry focused on this fascinating niche, and put together a collection that is second to none. Midget window cards were distributed for a fairly brief period, from about 1932 to 1947, and were often printed in much smaller quantities than other formats. There are a lot of great titles offered here, but two I'd like to point out are those for The Maltese Falcon <http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667&hdnJumpToLot=1&Lot_No=28879> and The Mummy's Tomb<http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667&hdnJumpToLot=1&Lot_No=29215>, both featuring art from the highly desirable one sheets. If you haven't discovered the joys of collecting this great format, this is your chance to start. I've always been a big fan of serials, and I love the posters that are associated with them. In fact, Grey Smith and I will be releasing a book later this year entitled Capes, Crooks, and Cliffhangers: Heroic Serials of the Golden Age (more info at www.HA.com/Serial<http://www.ha.com/Serial>), which will feature hundreds of images of rare and beautiful serial posters. One of my personal favorites is the poster for Captain America<http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667&hdnJumpToLot=1&Lot_No=28938>, the classic Timely Comics' character. Although the serial itself takes major liberties with the character, it's still a lot of fun to watch, and the poster is colorful and dramatic. Posters from this serial can be fairly hard to find, appealing as they do to both movie poster and comic fans, so this is a great opportunity to add this one to your collection. If you've been collecting movie posters for any length of time, you certainly know that one of the most desirable 1950s horror posters is the one sheet from Universal's classic, The Creature from the Black Lagoon<http://movieposters.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=667&hdnJumpToLot=1&Lot_No=29156>. Of course, we have that excellent piece in this auction, as well as a window card and a gorgeous three sheet, but for my money, the piece to have is the incredible six sheet. This rare poster features great images of the Creature, star Richard Carlson, and the lovely Julia Adams in her trademark white bathing suit. The graphics are similar to those found on the window card, but far more eye-catching and dramatic. Be sure to take a look at this one if you've never seen it before. That's it for this time. The auction begins next Tuesday, November 13 at 1:00 pm Central time.
