I just want to put in my two cents worth about the catalog as well. Like the auctions, the catalog has improved with every outing and I think this is the best so far. Heritage has learned that the more a potential buyer knows about a piece, the more reasons they have for bidding on it. The result is not just, most importantly, better auction results overall but a catalog that will stand the test of time because it also serves as history lesson in cinema.
As for the auction itself: Much as I enjoy seeing such a large and varied offering of high-end pieces, I wonder if it hasn't gotten too big, with too many items for sale. Some of the pieces might have done better in a separate auction. Maybe it's time for Heritage to reduce the number of items on offer and just add another auction to their calendar so stuff doesn't get "lost" in the crowd. Just an idea. Congratulations, Heritage! It was always a high priced poster and I almost bought it about 6 years ago from a customer of mine who was retiring and selling off his collection. He wanted $10,000, which at the time was about $2500 above the top figure it had sold for. I passed. When I say it close at near $50,000 yesterday, I couldn't believe it. It sold for about $19,000 just one year ago at Heritage. Wow!! I don't think that certain pieces selling for lower prices than normal is any indication that those titles are no longer desired. I think it was just a case of the timing. Spending is down all over right now due to the economy (there is a reason Ebay has lowered their listing prices in the past month as a "temporary special"). It is near Christmas and I think a lot of people saved up for the high ticket items that don't show up often. Some of those items skyrocketed above their normal prices and the listed estimates. Don’t be offended, it get’s boring seeing the auctioneer the whole time. Pointing at the left or right…. I have to say there were a few times it took a lot of personal strength NOT to click on the big BID NOW button. It was taunting me a few times on some items. But I just recently purchased a very expensive poster and I am tapped. In general it felt like items you see at every Heritage Auction or up on Ebay with some regularity didn’t do great. Didn’t do bad, but also not great. Items that didn’t come up all the time seemed to do quite well. (This is based on the estimates as I am average collector and by no means an expert on all poster prices.) It was also fascinating to see items that went way over estimate, you could actually SEE the BIDDING war happen right in front of you on the computer screen. Now that was cool and it really for the first time help me understand how every auction has one or two of those items where you scratch your head…… Just wondering what other people thought if they watched it or not.
