This is an original Paramount Pictures one sheet for the 1932 Cecil B. DeMille spectacle THE SIGN OF THE CROSS—including an all-star cast of Fredric March, Elissa Landi, Claudette Colbert, and Charles Laughton. The certifiably insane Nero (Laughton) decides he wants a new Rome, and the fastest way to get it is to burn down the old city. But when the fire gets totally out of control and begins to turn the whole city against the Emperor, Nero blames the Christians for the deadly conflagration. The Emperor orders all the Christians rounded up and condemned to horrible deaths in the arena. The handsome and dashing Prefect of Rome Marcus Superbus (March) falls madly in love with the beautiful Christian woman Mercia (Landi) and begs Nero to save her. But the vampy Empress Poppaea (Colbert), who secretly lusts for Marcus, persuades her husband not to spare the Christian woman. When March realizes that there is no hope, he joins Mercia in the dungeon and vows to die along with her. Marcus and Mercia go arm and arm into the arena in the final scene. There were many totally outrageous scenes in the movie—including an almost naked Colbert in her famous bath scene using real milk from asses (the set gave off such a foul smell that Colbert almost fainted twice), an orgy and dance of almost naked slave girls before March, and many scenes of incredible violence never before seen on the silver screen. The scenes of Christians being eaten alive by lions aroused the wrath of the Catholic Church. However, the film was an enormous success and made millions for Paramount, re-establishing DeMille as a major force in filmmaking. Considering its age, this original stone lithograph is in excellent condition with beautiful and vibrant colors. Originally folded as all one sheets from this period were, it has some pinholes on the borders and one small pinhole in the center of the poster above the name of Fredric March.
