MOPO = this is strange..In my moves last few years,, I have one poster
that Ive displayed..
Its a film usherette and is on a wall in my basement with a movie reel,
some clappers, and stuff..
In all tese yearsI had no idea it was a Alvin art piece as its a
exhibition poster I bought... I think for Edward weston Gallerys in La
in liek The 80s??
I forget yet ive lugged that poster and of all posters its been one of
my favorite as it was like a petty
or vargas type feel.. I even made a Product I never releaed that was
inspired by that poster and I called
Muriel after a 6th grade elementry teacher I had... So i just find it
strange how i liked John Alvins work even though I had no idea what
posters hes done and ive been selling since 1977,,,wow
also when i looked athis work on the site the moper sent us.. I had a
dropped jaw and felt like I missed
a entire chapter of poster artists..I knew he did Bladerunner however
all the other Great posters I just had no idea..perhaps because they
were not signed and perhaps because his style was varied although
awesome. With Peak, Amsel and others I could generally see similarity..
wow.... wake up call.
here below is what I sent to the Alvin tribute site.
best, Tom
Hello - Ive been selling Movie memorabilia since 1977 yet until I visted
this site that was posted on Mopo
news group , I must admit I failed to recognize the body of work John
has done up till now.. when I viewed the
site I saw that many of the posters ive admired for years were done by
John Alvin. I feel as though I missed a
great person that I wish I could only let know when he was here, how
much I liked his posters. Yet heres
what should tell you how much i liked his work, I have no posters on
display in my home but one that
Ive had years and never knew the artist. Its a film usherette that I
only saw today on your site, So after
all the years it is the only poster I carried through several moves ,
and since I have 1000s of posters ( many of the titles he has done in my
inventory as I speak, and I will view them entirely differant now.
it almost seems like a very special tribute to John as I didnt even know
whos art it was. ( I was familier with Bladerunner) After viewing the
Art he has done, I am embarraced that I did not know his work better. My
favorite artists also include Drew Struzan, Amsel, Peak, amd I put
Alvin right there with that group.
My very best to family and friends this willbe a great loss in Cinema
and for all. I am so glad to hear of people he inspired and will
continue to. A great great artist. Thanks John!.
best, Tom Martin
