For me it really comes down to convenience more than anything else. A sniper lets me bid on many items, regardless of when they end, and without having to tip my hand by bidding in advance.
The reality for me is that, with an extended auction format, I probably won't bid on auctions that I can't be in front of the computer to see finish.
