HERITAGE VINTAGE MOVIE POSTERS SIGNATURE AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS The Heritage Vintage Movie Poster Signature Auction is just around the corner (March 11 & 12, in Dallas, Texas and online at www.HA.com<http://www.HA.com>), and we want to take this opportunity to draw your attention to a few outstanding pieces. These are posters that we feel definitely deserve your attention, as they would make important additions to any collection. As always, your comments on these selections are more than welcome. Let's start with a few science fiction favorites:
The Man from Planet X<http://www.ha.com/693*64007&type=prte-pr022808b> (United Artists, 1951). One Sheet (27" X 41"): ESTIMATE: $7,000 - $9,000 When most film aficionados think of Edward G. Ulmer, they usually think of the atmospheric chiller, The Black Cat, one of the first films to team legendary horror icons Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Not to take anything away from that worthy effort, but it should be noted that Ulmer also helmed this classic sci-fi film, one of the more thoughtful entries in the "strange visitor from another planet" genre, and one of the best examples of what a science fiction movie from this period could be. In this film, a benevolent alien visits Earth, intending only to make friendly contact. Unfortunately, the alien is corrupted by a small-minded scientist, with tragic results. The film was blessed with outstanding poster art, and the one sheet particularly has become quite prized among collectors. The image of the weird looking alien menacing the helpless Earth girl is truly chilling, and perfectly captures the mood of this wonderful film. If you're looking for a great poster to add to your collection, and an even better choice to display on your wall, you owe it to yourself to check this beauty out. Invasion of the Body Snatchers<http://www.ha.com/693*64014&type=prte-pr022808b> (Allied Artists, 1956). Half Sheet (22" X 28") Style B: ESTIMATE: $7,000 - $11,000 With Cold War paranoia at its height in the 1950s, Americans were seeing invading aliens - and infiltrating Communists - under every bed and around every corner. Not slow to take advantage of social trends, Hollywood responded with a number of science fiction films that preyed on these fears. One of the best of this intriguing bunch is the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, about alien pods that come to Earth and replace normal people with soulless duplicates. Of course, the very real fear in many people's minds was that the Russians were going to do the exact same thing at any time. This is the very rare "spotlight dance" style half sheet, one of the most attractive pieces from this hugely popular - and still very affecting - film. Although other posters for this title come up for sale with some frequency, this style half sheet is much rarer, and deserves a place of honor in a fine collection. Take a look at it and see if you don't agree. The Day the Earth Stood Still<http://www.ha.com/693*64058&type=prte-pr022808b> (20th Century Fox, 1951). One Sheet (27" X 41"): ESTIMATE: $10,000 - $15,000 Of all the posters ever produced for science fiction films, this one, along with the one sheet for Forbidden Planet, stand at the top of the heap as the most desirable examples in the genre. Looking at them, it's easy to see why. Both spotlight frightening - and fabulously designed - robots menacing scantily-clad Earth girls, both promote exceptional films that set the standards for all sci-fi films to come. Although The Day the Earth Stood Still features all the elements of standard sci-fi - the arriving alien, the giant robot, and the cool flying saucer - it's far more than a mere "aliens come to Earth" flick, as the screenplay presents a thoughtful and intelligent story of tolerance, understanding, and xenophobia, a heady concoction for any age. We understand that this movie is currently being remade, which means interest in material from the original production should be at an all-time high soon. This might be a good opportunity to acquire this key piece before prices go into the stratosphere! Attack of the 50 Foot Woman<http://www.ha.com/693*64092&type=prte-pr022808b> (Allied Artists, 1958). One Sheet (27" X 41"): ESTIMATE: $8,000 - $12,000 In the 1950s, giant monsters were everywhere. Giant spiders, giant gila monsters, giant mantises, giant shrews, giant leeches... they all menaced us at one time or another. After exposure to a plutonium bomb, hapless GI Glen Manning became The Amazing Colossal Man and threatened both Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam. Not to be outdone, the very next year saw poor Nancy Archer grow to enormous size as the 50 Foot Woman, giving her a golden opportunity to go after her cheating dog of a husband. The poster for this perennially favorite film is a true classic: Allison Hayes as Nancy, barely clad in a white skirt and bra, causing a pileup on the freeway that even Godzilla would be proud of. A poster high on every sci-fi collector's wish list, this gorgeous one sheet features artwork by Reynold Brown, who also painted unforgettable images for such classics as Creature from the Black Lagoon, Teenage Caveman, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Time Machine, This Island Earth, She-Gods of Shark Reef, and House on Haunted Hill, to name just a few. If it's great imagery you're after, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than this 1950s stunner. That's just a small taste of all the great posters that await you in this exciting auction.
