HERITAGE VINTAGE MOVIE POSTERS SIGNATURE AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS
The Heritage Vintage Movie Poster Signature Auction begins tomorrow, March 11,
in Dallas, Texas, and continues on Wednesday, March 12, but there's still time
to enter your bids online at www.HA.com<http://www.HA.com>. We want to take
this last opportunity to draw your attention to a few outstanding pieces. These
are posters that we feel definitely deserve your attention, as they would make
important additions to any collection. As always, your comments on these
selections are more than welcome. Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s was a
magical place, where dreams were made and sold. Here are just a few examples of
posters from this magical period:

Of Human Bondage<http://www.ha.com/693*65083&type=prte-pr022908d> (RKO, 1934).
One Sheet (27" X 41"):
ESTIMATE: $9,000 - $18,000
A landmark Pre-Code film starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis, this is a
frustrating title for collectors, as paper is virtually non-existent. Based on
the novel by W. Somerset Maugham, the story follows the trials and tribulations
of Philip Carey (Howard) and his disastrous affair with a trashy waitress
(Davis), but finds eventual redemption in the love of Sally Altheny (Frances
Dee). Lovely stone litho images of Davis and Howard adorn this beautiful
poster, which makes good design use of the obligatory book cover. Make sure you
take a moment to have a look at this exceptionally rare poster, one that you
may never see again.

Gone with the Wind<http://www.ha.com/693*64380&type=prte-pr022908d> (MGM,
1939). Three Sheet (41" X 81"):
ESTIMATE: $7,000 - $10,000
Considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made, Gone with the
Wind is a stirring epic about the conflict between the North and South before,
during and after the American Civil War. Virtually everything about this film
is memorable, from the dialogue to the sets to the costumes and more. Who out
there isn't familiar with great lines like, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a
damn," and "As God is my witness, I'll never go hungry again," even if they've
never seen the film? The fact that it has become such an indelible part of our
pop cultural heritage points to the enormous importance of this significant
movie. We're pleased to offer a very rare three sheet from the original release
of this picture, during the time that producer David O. Selznick was touting it
as a "Limited Engagement." It went on to win eight Academy Awards, including
Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming), Best Screenplay, Best Actress
(Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel). This is a
beautiful poster, with some very evocative imagery, that any fan of this
wonderful film will be proud to own and display.

Cabin in the Sky<http://www.ha.com/693*64537&type=prte-pr022908d> (MGM, 1943).
One Sheet (27" X 41") Style C:
ESTIMATE: $8,000 - $10,000
Talk about an all-star cast! Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena
Horne, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Rex Ingram, Mantan Moreland, and
Butterfly McQueen, all directed by Vincente Minnelli, helming his first film!
This memorable film, one of the first from a major studio to spotlight an
all-black cast, is a lavish time capsule, preserving some of the greatest jazz
performances of the 1940s. Although "separate cinema," black films for black
audiences at a time when segregation was the norm, was a solid part of
Hollywood production by this time, this was the first time that one of the big
studios picked up on the idea, which would lead to such classics as Stormy
Weather and Ebony Parade (a half sheet for this film is also featured in this
auction). Few of them had posters as wonderful as this shining example,
however, featuring jazzy, kinetic art by noted caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. For
every single reason, this is a solid classic, a marvelous poster promoting a
marvelous film.

Moon Over Miami<http://www.ha.com/693*64902&type=prte-pr022908d> (20th Century
Fox, 1941). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style B:
ESTIMATE: $6,000 - $10,000
The human race has always been fascinated with beautiful women. From the Venus
de Milo to the Mona Lisa to the Gibson Girl, there's something about a lovely
lady that makes us sit up and take notice. 20th Century Fox was undoubtedly
capitalizing on this fascination when they produced the posters for this
classic film starring Betty Grable. Known as one of the foremost pinup models
of her day, Grable was a leggy sensation, the favorite of GIs and hometown
heroes alike. The elusive Style B one sheet we're offering, as well as the
attractive insert offered in the very next lot, feature incredible artwork
attributed to noted pinup artist Alberto Vargas, whose "Vargas Girl" paintings
graced the pages of Playboy for many years. If it's true, as we're told, that
"there's nothing like a dame," then there's certainly nothing like this
beautiful poster. Believe us, this is one you don't want to miss!

Love Before Breakfast<http://www.ha.com/693*65045&type=prte-pr022908d>
(Universal, 1936). One Sheet (27" X 41"):
ESTIMATE: $14,000 - $18,000
Like Betty Grable, Carole Lombard was an exquisite beauty. With that being
said, the image of Lombard with a big ol' shiner, as seen in this marvelous one
sheet, sure catches one's eye! There's a slightly ironic aspect to this poster
as well, as in 1926, after the young starlet had made a handful of films, she
was in a terrible car accident that left her face badly scarred. She underwent
extensive plastic surgery - much riskier then than it would be today - only to
have Fox cancel her contract. She persevered, making short films for Sennett,
and later features for Pathé and Paramount, soon to become a major star. She
developed a reputation, both onscreen and off, for her tough, feisty
personality, perfectly captured in this beautiful image. While we expect
bidding to be active and enthusiastic on this rare and desirable piece, we hope
none of our bidders end up looking like Lombard on this one sheet!

Dark Victory<http://www.ha.com/693*65086&type=prte-pr022908d> (Warner Brothers,
1939). Six Sheet (81" X 81"):
ESTIMATE: $15,000 - $25,000
Everyone knows that legendary actress Bette Davis was particularly noted for
her sultry, heavy-lidded eyes, and that's the feature that's so dramatically
highlighted in this exquisite six sheet. Undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous
images of the beautiful Ms. Davis ever produced, this is a stunning piece, at
the same time both simple and dramatic, and made even more desirable in that it
is one of only two copies known to exist. Dark Victory is a glorious
tear-jerker, and one of the greatest performances of Davis's career. For any
fan of this wonderful actress, this is the ultimate prize. Take a look for
yourself and see what you think.
