Ira is 100% right.... I remember when Saving private Ryan came out in
repro they were double sided
and the originals where single.. the double also had a [upllish cast to it..
what people need to understand is the bootleggers even left the union
bug printers label on and the
NSS # on many of the reprints... and for 80s posters if the are printed
on the same 100 lb paper stock on the same presses that did the 1st run
and know with plateless printers that can tweak the image in digital..
the reprints can be sharer and have more color zap then the originals...
its a moot point as I see it on 80s -2008 as the paper as varied so
little..
almost any poster thats had any demand has been reprinted it appears..
and with large printers people can do onsie reprints on a large printer
from Home....
so recent posters are at a altime record of abundance... and yet who
wants the titles even if you can get them? Theyre are many newbie
dealers that can ebay anything that comes out. the mangers of theaters ,
studios themselves...
s perhaps we are limited to pre-90s posters... the new titles seem like
they have as much value or scarcity as beanie Babies.. !!
Good post Ira!

While I am no expert on REPROS, I am assuming that there are that are double sided as well.
I can tell you as someone who works at a studio. All the posters I get to hand out to people, use for promotional items, or whatever are single sided. They are all legit as I have them from the studio, but they are also single sided.
Sometimes I get double sided, sometimes single sided. I don't think you can universally say a double sided or a single sided poster is a repro.
I do think you have to look at the history of the poster if you can. Or the reputation of the dealer.
Best,
Ira

Well, I may be asking the question incorrectly. There are reprints that I see for sale
at sites like movieposter.com and such. I think they are single sided, though. Maybe
that's the difference and I should be asking "are all double sided Iron Giants
original?"

Doug,
In answer to your question in this particular instance, I am not sure there would have been reprints considered as the film was far from successful. Ironically, the adult advance was considered one of the numerous reasons cited regarding the films marketing, a failure as it was proven confusing for a parent on the suitability of the film for children. This failure in advance branding of the film was actually determined prior to film's release hence a last minute switch in print campaigns that showed an animation/family friendly look that also proved late. I believe an alternative onesheet was also issued at the last minute. Being from WB, they also did not have the arm's length list of licensees to align that Disney and DreamWorks enjoy to assuage such a critical mistake in imaging. Now look at the prices some collectors put on the poster. On Ebay, anywhere from $50 to $300. It was always well received by the wrong target demo.
When I first saw the onesheet and still in exhibition at the time, I thought it
rocked. Then as tracking numbers failed to pick up closer to opening we knew
the film was going to disappoint the Sunday prior to its Wednesday opening and
by the weekend following we knew it was going to be hell to hold until Labor
Day on anything but a split scheduled screen. I don't think the film grossed
more than 5 million that opening 5 days if I recall.
At any rate this just doesn't bode well for a poster to have a demand for
reprints in any kind of volume, especially to measure up to the quality of
printing the adult advances nevertheless enjoyed. They are quite fantastic.

How do you tell the original Iron Giant from the reprints? Besides
only buying from the reputable dealers on MOPO, of course, are there size or
copyright tells?
Thank you
