When I was in high school, I was friends with Peter Nelson, the son of
director Ralph Nelson, who was most famous for CHARLY (Cliff
Robertson) and LILIES OF THE FIELD (Sidney Poitier). I spent a week
visiting their family in Pacific Palisades and had dinner with Mr. and
Mrs. Nelson and their two kids and director Franklin J. Schaeffner
(PLANET OF THE APES/PATTON). I was only about 15 so I was both awed
and frightened of the two directors. Schaeffner was very elegant,
refined, and charming. Nelson was a bit scary and sarcastic. We all
went to the Universal Amphitheatre to see Ted Neeley in JESUS CHRIS
SUPERSTAR. If I met these people today, I would love to hear about
their experiences in the golden years of television. Nelson did a lot
of Playhouse 90s type material and Schaeffner directed the famous tour
of the White House with Jacqueline Kennedy!
When I was working at Cinemonde in the late 80s I had dinner with
director George P. Cosmatos. He was a REAL character but he really
loved movies. He made several very good ones including TOMBSTONE and
THE CASSANDRA CROSSING. He died a couple years later probably from
some heart thing. He was the type of man where you could see his
blood pressure elevating as he talked!
The most exciting real celebrity type I ever was near was Wynonna
Ryder. It was after the Oscars the year TITANIC won and my friend and
I went to Jerry's Deli in West Hollywood for a bite after the
Ceremony. The booths are close together and my friend and I were in
one and Wynonna Ryder and a man were right next to us. She was
dressed casual (and absolutely stunningly beautiful) and eating what I
think was a pastrami Sandwich. Later, she was dolled up again for the
Vanity Fair party.
