Mo/Marx-Po People,
I guess in the evolution of an originally sole Hirschfeld Marx Brothers
quest, I forgot that in the case of the Brothers, I had expanded the search
of images to include "all" of the film art of the brothers.
This is much easier with thirteen films, than the tons and tons that say
Laurel and Hardy or Chaplin had (though, it's very hard to find Hirschfeld
art on Chaplin anyway aside from The Great Dictator, a 1927 Pathe Sunnyside
re-release, and the 1951 re-release pressbook for City Lights.)
I have images for most of the posters to Animal Crackers and Duck Soup--as
I've had the recently auctioned (consigned by me) pressbook for the later
and a British pressbook for Animal Crackers. I realize quite a few posters
are non extant, and this still allows us to see the three three-sheets
(three sheets to the wind?) that were from Animal Crackers (though I have an
image of one of the three that actually DID, and does, exist.)
It is not an easy task to obtain most of the Marx Brothers lobby card and
poster images, but I'm doing the best I can. I'll list some of the items I
have and it shows what I am lacking. If you think you might have an image
that you would allow being licensed (well, in the sense that you get a
credit line and $100.00 per image--plus scanning costs, etc>) then please
let me know.
-Cocoanuts: Have an image of the Broadway window card, film window card, and
the famed one-sheet and insert. Have only three scene cards from the
film--this is where all eight are scene cards, unlike MGM where the first
one is the title card. So, I am the weakest in this film for scene cards
(and those are only due to them being consigned at Heritage recently.)
-Animal Crackers: There's a common color image out there that I don't have.
Might have to scan a reproduced poster to get the image, but prefer to find
an original. Missing one scene card, but know Mr. Hershenson has it in his
archives. Aside from that, just have the single three sheet image.
-Monkey Business: Have an image of the 24-sheet from a gentleman in
Australia (black and white though), and both full-color Alajalov trade ads
from the studio annuals, have five of the Jumbo Lobby Card images and will
be able to get five of the eight scene cards--these are hard to find (up
there with Horse Feathers and Cocoanuts in rarity.)
-Horse Feathers: Have one three sheet poster, two one sheet posters, two
window cards, and four scene cards. Need more scene cards.
-Duck Soup: Am able to show all the poster images from the pressbook, but
are duotone red and black (might convert to black and white for book.) Have
all eight scene cards, two one sheets, two half sheets, and the window card.
-United Artist: Have both the title card and four scene cards exactly for
both A Night at Casablanca and Love Happy, would like to complete those sets
too. Have a few from Copacabana and Double-Dynamite, but think those might
be outside the scope of what we want to show...
So, really just looking for some scene cards and maybe inserts and window
cards for these Paramount films. Will certainly be able to show about 90% of
the total film art for the Marx Brothers.
If you have any leads, or posters, please let me know. Trying my best to be
as much of a completist (but not elitist) as possible ;P
Thanks,
Daniel Kinske...
