When I first saw a Civil War movie with a Gatling gun, I too thought it was
likely an anachronism. But it actually WAS invented by Dr. Richard J.
Gatling in 1861, and WAS used by the North in the Civil War (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatling_gun )

Basically, the first Gatling gun was a bunch of rifles rigged together in a
circle, and you turned a crank and the rifles all started firing. Naturally
this was a huge improvement in warfare, but because the new invention had
lots of bugs in it, that weren't perfected for years, it did not play a big
part in the winning of the war.
