Actually there is a very close alternative, many backers today will be happy
to do a "starch-back" or "gel-back" where your poster can be cleaned,
de-acidified, worked on and NOT put on linen, and you get to keep the folds
(though they are flattened out greatly).
Ask your favorite worker about this process.
