I'm with Freeman. Curtiz was an incredible director that, even though he was subject to the studio system, left his own mark on his films. I believe that also of Frank Capra and Billy Wilder. I am a huge Hitchcock fan and think him a brilliant director. While there are definite signs of his humor in many of his films he is for the most part, rightfully so, a one genre director.
Robert Wise has a particular spot in my heart. I met him at a Director's Guild function and had a chance to talk to him about films like Citizen Kane, West Side Story, Sound of Music and one of my favorites The Sand Pebbles. This man was brilliant and had a keen sense of filmmaking and entertainment, which is what I believe films are all about. I think Spielberg is the best overall modern day director there is, bar none. While other directors have great films, his versatility to different subject matters and even the way he changes his own style within different films makes his work very interesting to me. While I love the "fun" films that we typically associate with him, E.T., Jaws, Raiders, etc., my favorite films are his more "intimate" films like The Color Purple and Schindler's List. It's so difficult to compare directors. It is so subjective and personal really and most people probably associate their choices with favorite films. I'm sure if they did a survey of younger filmgoers, none of the directors we have mentioned here, except Spielberg, would be on the list. Go figure.............
