Hi All,

I normally don't participate in these discussions since I'm not a dealer and
I wish eBay would drown anyway.. BUT since Phil brought up the question of
WHY???? I thought that I would chime in on this.. just to give my 2 cents
worth.. (and that's about how much it's worth)

I believe that I can tell you why.. in a simplified version..

eBay was a marketing marvel that changed the marketing worldwide forever.
The loose framework was a perfect match for the economy and gave anyone that
had access to a computer and mail the opportunity to make money.. And since
it was just a program that connected buyers and sellers, eBay made a
fortune, so everyone was happy...

.

that match up was sort of like flannel pajamas on a cold winter day....feels
really GREAT!!

but unfortunately, crooks also realized the potential and started making
larger and larger amounts of money.. and quite a bit of it in the
collectibles area, where collectors are so gullible and it's hard to stop
them. This was a real weakness in the design and there was no way for them
to EVER get control of with such a loose programming framework, so they set
up the Vero group to try to self police and hopefully keep everything quiet
enough that no one will really notice...

this is sort of like having loose button holes on those flannel pajamas and
it keeps letting the cold air in and gets really frustrating....

But NOW, there have been several manufacturers that have won groundbreaking
lawsuits against eBay and with these wins, it is alerting all the other
manufacturers that are being ripped of by the selling of fakes and stolen
merchandise and a mirad of other problems that this loose framework can't
control...

sort of like, you're bending over in those great flannel pajamas, the butt
flap is open and you're about to get something back there besides cold air
..

They have no choice...the writing is on the wall.. change or DIE!!

Collectibles are the main problem and their going to make it where THEY have
the control of WHO sells and WHAT they sell and they'll do it by controlling
HOW collectors order. THEY will get the money and then pay the seller.. that
way, if anything is sold that THEY don't like. THEY can stop it.

The idea that e*ay wants to be another Amazon is indeed an interesting
notion.

There are several other auctions sites across the world, but none of them
have ever been able

to replicate or even compete with the e*ay, and that includes several over
the years that have poured millions of dollars into development and
marketing, only to go down the gurgler.

The question as to why such a successful business as e*ay has never garnered
ONE real major competitor is something that has perplexed many people,
including a couple of serious business strategists I know.

Similarly, Amazon is something of a one stop shop for so many people
internationally, that the great irony would be that e*ay in its quest to
become another, simply becomes a lame duck itself (it is already seriously
limping thanks to its near obsession with both fixing the wheel that isn't
broken, to alienating not just thousands of full and part time sellers, but
buyers as well. There are actually lots of people who do not trust PP is
just one example).

The fat lady has not yet sung, but the actions from San Jose are indeed
looking like a protracted ending. Death by slow hara kiri and using a
teaspoon and not a sword. The question that many in the business community
are asking (as they dump their shares post haste) is WHY?

Phil
