Hey All,

That reminds me of something I always thought was strange with the movie poster
hobby. And, I'm guessing this is exactly the same for sportscards, stamps and
comic books. 90% of all movie posters are, in effect, worthless. The vast
majority of movies that get released are pure crap that no one will ever want
to collect. It's not until they're really old that they start to have value
irregardless of the title/stars/director. Yet, if you look in a price guide,
these 'commons' always seem to be over-priced by a factor of like 10. A
no-name movie poster from the 60's, 70's or 80's is really worth no more than
maybe a dollar, yet would you ever see one for sale at that price, or a
price-guide that showed that as the true value? No. Never. People seem to
think that because a Taxi Driver 1sh is worth $200, that Birds Do It, Bees Do
It can't be worth any less than 5 or 10% of that. Common sense, right?

It's always shocked me at how over-valued most lesser titles are. Yet, it
never seems to correct (I guess people aren't going to waste their time
photographing a lesser poster if they're only going to get 50 cents for it).
And, how many times have you seen someone trying to sell a collection of modern
movie posters (already picked through for the valuable titles), and they want
$20 a piece for the entire collection, because they think commons are actually
worth something (because they found one on eBay from a deluded seller with a
high starting price)? Then, they probably think you're a prick for offering
them $1 for it...

I actually love buying poster lots though. I've purchased several large
collector/theatre/warehouse collections in the past. I usually pick out the
posters I want and then sell/consign/give-away the rest. Almost every time,
I've gotten many times what I originally paid for the entire collection - just
for the dregs. Or, I'll sell a few of the good pieces I don't want and it'll
pay for the rest. It's kind of like being paid to go through a large
collection of posters and keep what you want! No, actually, it's exactly
that... ;o) Although, the only problem is space. You end up with roll upon
roll of things like film festival one sheets for short films that never got
released anywhere, written & directed by Nobody, starring Nobody. And, if you
think Birds Do It, Bees Do It is worthless, well... And, speaking of which...
If anyone's in Vancouver or nearby, I've got rolls of free posters for you, if
you want 'em! Just let me know and come get 'em...

Cheers,

Bob

Subject: [MOPO] FS: ForSale ebay: poster lots versus individual purchases

how often do poster or lobby card lots generate profits for dealers?

i have purchased lots, and then resold the pieces i do not collect.
SOMETIMES I WIN, SOMETIMES I LOSE.

  timing is everything.

presently on ebay, i have listed 4 one sheets lesser titles: ebay item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200253718903&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=010

although, when i did the searches on ebay today, these 4 posters could cost
in excess of $50-75

meanwhile..........it may sell for just 9.99 wow

ALL MY ITEMS END TOMORROW AT THIS TIME
