Houston is a mess, although not nearly as bad as Galveston and other coastal communities of course.
75% of the city is still without power, and it is coming back ever-so-slowly. We are on the fourth floor of a large apartment building close to downtown, and I can report that there were a few more lights on last night looking west across the city. But this is very very minimal. Change is coming at a snail's pace. Traffic lights are out and frequently just gone from their wires or poles. Some poles are bent completely sideways, so that one direction of traffic appears to have two sets of lights -- of course neither are working. Traffic is starting to get unmanageable, with so many lights out, many people coming back into town at the behest of their employers, and many not understanding how to take turns at a 4 way stop. Fuel is hard to come by, adding to the tension. The restaurant across the street from us, the landmark Brennan's, did indeed burn completely. The brick exterior remains, but the inside is destroyed. Luckily it didn't cross the street. Large trees are down all over the place. Blocking streets, on top of homes and garages. Debris cleanup means piles of garbage at the edges of the streets. We fared pretty well, with only water damage in our apartment that we are moving out of anyway. We have had power and water since Monday, but no cable or internet service. I came back to work today so I am able to write this and catch up on the outside world. The government agencies are completely uncoordinated, but what else is new.
