Several of the bogus sets of cards I have seen - compared next to bona fide originals in person - had an NSS number font, not dissimilar to what can best be described as an old-fashioned Courier typewriter font - but noty crisp and clean. Most odd. They also exhibited the same other signs - somewhat murky printing/moire, and non-sharp GAU and NSS fine print. And handling the paper side by side, and smelling the inks/paper was another test.
The sets inspected at the time included TAXI DRIVER, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, CHINATOWN, GOODFELLAS, STAR WARS among others. This was at least 5 years ago.... and they were being compared to my own sets, all of which had been given me directly by the film distributors. The friend who had spent a considerable sum of money on them was able to get a refund from the two or three sellers involved, in one instance at least by threatening a CC chargeback via PP, even if it meant losing his own PP account to do so. Hell hath no fury like a serious collector ripped off with fakes. And what about the "lobby sets" for films that no lobby sets were issued in US, or even printed in US for international use...? Just faked from either other country sets (like the Australian 11x14 HALLOWEEN set, one of the most famous examples) or knocked up from distributor issued 35mm and/or 5x4 transparencies, or taken off French/German/Spanish sets. I can understand poorer print quality and moire effect if copying from an original, but I'm puzzled why the fakers would use a different font, when it would presumably be easier just to make a complete copy of the original? Thanks, Paul www.movieposterstudio.com In a message dated 09/10/2008 12:51:22 GMT Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have also noticed the NSS number is frequently the wrong font on some of these fake lobby cards, and the GAU and fine print does not stand up to strong magnification as Ron says. This also reveals a fine if somewhat murky moire effect on some titles (GOODFELLAS comes to mind in this respect). Some of these fake lobby cards and inserts haven been around now for several years.
