I just concluded the first two parts of my Ninth Annual Halloween Auction,
and looking at the results, it seems fair to say that there doesn't seem to
be a recession in mid-range movie posters!

Go to http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/11.html to see the Tuesday night
results (folded one-sheets and lobby cards).

Go to http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/12.html to see the Thursday night
results (unfolded one-sheets, half-sheets, inserts, Belgian, Japanese, and
lots more).

While there are few crazy high or crazy low results, the prices are solid
across the board, especially impressive given that we sold nearly 2,000
items. There were very few quality items that "slipped between the cracks".

What accounts for this in a world supposing teetering on the edge of a major
Depression greater than that of the early 1930s?

Perhaps part of it is that the "recession" is somewhat overblown by a 24
hour media so desperate for news that they try to create "news" that may or
may not be real. And part of it may be that collectors respond well to being
treated really well by the auctioneer, with accurate descriptions,
unenhanced giant images, quick affordable shipping in custom made packaging,
and lots of cool bonuses (a limited edition high quality t-shirt to every
buyer, lots of $20 books to those club members who buy a handful of items in
a single night).

Of course, I mostly only sell mid-range items ($50 to $1,000). I don't know
whether or not there is any kind of recession in the high end of the movie
poster hobby (from $1,000 to "for millionaires only" nose-bleed price
territory). I assume those people who buy such items mostly have so much
money that no recession affects them, but then again, who really knows?

I can see a real argument for sinking spare money into quality movie
posters. With the U.S. govenerment printing endless "yacht-loads" of paper
money, doesn't it *HAVE* to start losing its value at some point soon? At
some point, a $100 bill won't be worth nearly what it once was, whereas a
quality poster bought with three or five of those $100 bills will surely
hold its value, and prove to be the better investment.
