There seem to be more of these "1971/stamped 1974" out there than non-stamped 1974s from my experience. Every time one passes through over the years it's always a stamped one.
Oddly, and I am sure coincidentally only, several I have seen have also had two extra (soft) vertical creases, as if they had been folded over again... but in all other respects have appeared completely unused. One I had had the 74/xxx stamp on back crossed out with a single line - but by who, why or when I have no idea. Does Bruce's (almost legendary) NSS number book go up to 1974? If so, it would interesting to know if that number on the back of the 1971 poster lines up with the number in the book. If someone has a 1971 non-stamped AND a 1971 stamped 74/xxxx on verso and can photograph them side by side and do a comparitive to printing, colouration, size etc, would be useful. One of the problems of any images on the internet pulled from different sources is that the accuracy of the image in terms of colour, printing quality, etc cannot be guaranteed. As for my opinion on the R74 poster in question. If you are familiar with NSS, I believe they had 6 regional print shops in operation at that time. NJ, Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, Wichita and Los Angeles. Each warehouse normally kept the posters for about 6 years. The NSS number is actually a control number for all items they had in stock associated with that release. If the film was re-released and they had usable posters left in stock, they would utilize the same posters, mark through the old control number and write in the new number. I believe the poster you are referring to was probably printed late in 1971 in one of the regional warehouses and since it didn't have the old number on it, when they needed more for the 74 rerelease, they just stamped the back and shipped them. Proving that is a different matter without finding someone that was there. For documentation purposes, it has a different stamp on the back so I have to list it separately until some type of proof can be found. Or do you think they just re-used the old printing plates for the 1974 release? It seems like they went out of their way to break every convention on these Starchild posters.
