I've done that with you, Sue. I bought some lc's that were cool
personal pieces. Around the holidays I did it again.
Even people who know what they're doing, get 'requests', you know. My
great 'finds' this year were lc's Genius at Work (dead ringer for my
husband, whose late father used to call him that) and something about
Eden, my daughter's middle name. There's a lot of water around Esther
Williams and my daughter is a double water sign. (I think I paid $2
for it) These are examples of pieces that will get framed and the
frames cost more than the posters. They got so excited about them, I
had to laugh!

Boy, can I verify this. I get dozens of calls a week from customers
buying frames for those $5-$20 posters of Bruce's. Most of them have
such glee that they got their "find" for so little. So, posters are
all about fun anyway and there are many more $5 posters out there
than $5000 posters, so I'm glad Bruce has a venue and even bothers
to offer them and make my customers happy!!

I would have 10,000 free lunches coming!
I pretty much DO come close to this, taking 75% on under $8 items.
But I DO lose money on sub-$20 items, so I have to do this to
discourage them.
The good news is that a lot of the sub $10 items I auctioned last
year were old consignments, and while I still have thousands of them
left, I am coming near the end of them, and I HAVE been getting much
more selective in the new consignments I take.
As to Sean's "My hat is really off to him and his staff for all the
hard work they do to ensure prices remain so affordable for so
many", I completely agree. Many MoPo'ers have been in this a long
time, and turn up their nose at "junk", but there really ARE a lot
of new collectors who love their $5 and $10 posters almost as much
as you love your $100 and $1,000 ones, and I provide an affordable
way for them to keep collecting.
Of course, there are also lots more of those types of collectors,
which is why I have sold to 31,000 people, whereas the "hardcore"
part of the hobby likely only numbers 5,000 or so.

I think Bruce should charge 100% commission for any poster that sell
for $9 or less, since that is his estimated cost of selling a
poster. Anyone who consigns a poster that sells for less than $3
should be required to buy him lunch.
I think I owe him a free lunch.

Very interesting.
And it definitely fits the notion that there are tons of bargains to
be had even at Bruce's site.
I think it's amazing that despite Bruce's begging for people to stop
sending him very inexpensive items (and having a consignment rate to
actively discourage it) still a full 30% of what he sold in 2008 was
for under $10.
Based on the numbers given, I wouldn't be surprised to see that 50%
of all his items actually sold for less than $20.
He's already told us that he loses money (or at best breaks even) on
sub-$20 items, and some quick math from the numbers in his ad show
that for taking up 30% of the work, those less than $10 posters only
bring in 3.6% of his revenues.
My hat is really off to him and his staff for all the hard work they
do to ensure prices remain so affordable for so many.

It seems that my latest Movie Collector's ad fits in this
discussion. Note that the ad was created before the first MoPo Loce/
Professor Powers post appeared!
