Some of my very best experiences as a dealer, and some of my consignors' best deals, have come about as a result of trades - and putting together a trade can be good fun in itself - one of the most enjoyable activities associated with collecting from time immemorial!
Furthermore, especially if, as some fear, we find ourselves in an inflationary economy with de-stabilized currencies (and prices for collectibles) trading can be one of the best ways to avoid getting caught up in cash deals that would have made sense last month, but might not in six months. The reverse is also true, by the way: If the economy turns deflationary, even relatively stable prices for collectibles and antiques will be affected negatively - trading becomes a way to avoid making a cash deal today that will look terrible from the other direction later on. Normally, we like to trade up in quality when possible: Several desirable recent posters (which we may have in multiples) for one desirable older poster, for instance. We've made some exceptions recently, however, that have clued us into the flipside: One great older poster that it may be hard to get the right price for in exchange for a bunch of newer, cheaper posters that sell much more easily - or are just cool to have. Cash is king, but a good trade can turn out a lot better over time, for both sides.
