From down here, Americans for the most part are hopeless spellers and have
been since 1776 when as part of the Declaration of Independence decided to
drop the King's english (now the Queen's english, but will again be the
King's english when QE2 decides it's time to go into dry-dock having
out-reigned Victoria) and use Z where there should be an S, and drop the U
from such words as COLOUR, FAVOUR etc.
Now, when they take a route (as in a direction/road/etc) they say ROWT, yet
when they buy a suit or stay in a hotel suite, they don't say SWOWT.
In Australia a ROUT is a military term. A ROUTE is pronouced ROOT, and a
ROOT is something you might get if you get lucky, as well as being the bits
of flora that extend underground.
The list is endless. If it's any consolation, people from Melbourne talk
funny, compared to Sydney.... even if they spell the same.
And how hard is it to read those old books where they didn't have a
different symbol for S, and used f for s?
Language. Endlessly fascinating.
