[MOPO] US one sheets- tri-folded?

Just a question.. back when US one sheets were machine folded (up  
until the 80's), was there ever a period when they were ONLY tri  
folded (thus not having a fold that ran down the center from top to  
bottom)? it would seem that the machine that did the folds would do  
them all the same way?
