The restored version of Red Shoes was premiered at Cannes last week, attended by Scorsese, Thelma Schoonmaker and various other devoted celebs and descendents of those involved. Suitable location, as much of the movie takes place in the South of France. Short news video from Channel4 in the UK - _http://tinyurl.com/rb8krb_ (http://tinyurl.com/rb8krb)
As Joe says, the Criterion DVD that already exists is quite remarkable, so can't begin to imagine what the restored version will look like on a larger screen. Scorcese and the restoration team will be moving onto other Powell/Pressburger classics, though Sony have already done A Matter Of Life And Death and released it on R1 DVD - presumably that's the one David K was watching, as the package also includes the restored Age Of Consent. I'll pretend to ignore that David wasn't completely taken with A Matter Of Life And Death, as it's my favourite film, despite all its baroque pretentiousness (or perhaps because of it). I know David has perfect taste elsewhere, so I'll forgive him this once! Switching briefly back on topic, I only found out recently that Mike Kaplan, noted poster collector and indeed poster creator (responsible for 2001 Ultimate Trip campaign amongst many illustrious others), was the person who first introduced Scorsese to Michael Powell. The resulting relationship influenced some of Scorsese's best movies, and brought Thelma Schoonmaker and Michael Powell together as husband and wife. Well done Mike! I think it's absolutely brilliant in the way the screenplay is worked out and in the imagination of its visuals. True, the color is more vivid and dynamic in BLACK NARCISSUS (also a wonderful movie), but I don't find A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH "slow" for an instant. It holds me in absolutely rapt attention every time I see it ( I saw this movie on its first release in the mid forties when a wee child...and I never forgot it!) Recently (this sunday I believe) the LA Times did a piece on the restoration of the negative for THE RED SHOES, which had been stored in England and apparently was in really bad shape. Robert Gitt of UCLA supervised the restoration and apparently it will be available on blu-Ray before too long. Can't wait!! Talk about the voluptuous use of color!!
