Vlad the Impaler used to nail the turbans of the messengers of bad news to
their heads so, you know, it could have been worse.
On the HAGGLE OR NOT TO HAGGLE.... everyone's perogative.
On the SLOW SALES... well, for those not interested in the news, there's a
major worldwide recession that's been going on for a lot longer than they
have been saying the R word outloud or in print. In fact if unemployment
keeps rising then they might start saying the D word next.
During a recession, the first thing that goes for most people with a list of
priorities in their lives like mortgages, mouths to feed, kids to put
through school, medicare cover etc, etc, etc.... the first thing to go is
discretionary spending.
On the EBAY ISSUE, most dealers with big inventories simply found that eBay
fees outweighed the time required and the sales results to bother to
continue. Some of us even ran many test searches on our own material (asking
buddies in different countries to utilise all the variations each country
has to find material in USA/UK/Australia and found NOTHING came up, and so
wondered even more what it was we were paying for. And stopped paying.

I thought this was a board in which opinions about the art of collection
moving picture ephemera were to be expressed?
I have responded to questions posed on this board by other people about
what Cinevent seemed to be a somber affair and why dealers didn't haggle
as much. Sorry if my answers offended but I don't think it appropriate
to kill the messenger, especially when the messenger is I. If everybody
is happen with the way Cinevent went this year that's great. But I
wonder why anyone asked the question to begin with? FRANC

But doesn't Franc have a sparkling personality?

Hey. if you're going to only spend 25 bucks at a collectible
fare you hold dear to your heart give a dealer a break and don't haggle
to save 2 bucks and don't waste his time. That's just plain cheap.

Well, forgive me for being completely out-of-touch with
the lifestyles of the rich and famous....
I didn't realize it was "poor form" to try to get a
better deal. I also didn't know there was a dollar threshold that makes
haggling "acceptable." From what other dealers have told me they DO
build wiggle room into all prices--even on the less pricey
items--knowing people like to bargain.
I'm certainly out of my league with you guys. (read high
rollers)
...and we wonder why we can't get younger (read that,
less financially solvent) people interested in our hobby...
Sheesh, Franc you certainly have a knack for always
saying just the right thing. I wanna party with you.

I feel the same way, except my number is
$10,000. I
can't imagine someone haggling over $100, but that's just me.

I don't haggle unless I'm spending at least $100
at someone's table. I just think it's poor form. FRANC

I must have just been unlucky that the
dealers having what I wanted to buy wouldn't haggle. I thought it odd
since it had NEVER happened before. As Rich pointed out, he would have
haggled...but alas, no items caught my eye on his table. Maybe next year
Rich!
Personally I don't think it's
out-of-line to
offer 20 bucks for something marked $25. One would assume that dealers
build in a bit of wiggle room since bargaining seems commonplace, if not
expected.

Dealers must have known that I was upset
by
te smelly rooms, so they treated me kindly allowed me to haggle. I
didn;t notice any difference this year in connection with the pricing
and the bargaining. Volume is the key. I personally get pissed off when
someone wants to buy one $25 item and offers me $20 or even $23. FRANC
