Darcy,
Good post. Since I posted the Elvis / MJ comparison, I thought I
would comment to
you. In terms of the enormity of their fanbase, and the simple
magnitude of their
stardom and legacy, alleged pedophilia notwithstanding, they are
similar. Lennon also comes
to mind, and is comparable because of the suddenness of the deaths.
But John Lennon's quintessential
fame comes from being a Beatle, not as a solo performer. (I can
already here the protest!) Of other solo performers, only Sinatra
belongs in this class. But that's another story.
I think you may be correct in terms of the cult of personality. I
think Elvis has it
over MJ in that respect. Elvis has become a commodity as much as
anything. If
that alone constitutes "remembering" him, then you may be correct.
Elvis may have the guns, so to speak, but MJ has the numbers, I think.
Although to argue this successfully would take a lot of study.
What is clear is that from a pop culture/performance point of view,
both are in a very small class.

A few years ago I simply put him in my blocked senders list. Never
saw another email from him again.
Then he added "X" to his signature and that blew it. (Middle name
starts with X???) Never bothered to put him in blocked again... just
delete virtually everything without reading it.
Time for blocked again. Then no censorship... and you never have to
see/read the drivel again!
And since I am pontificating here... re the Michael Jackson / Elvis
death link that was mentioned yesterday. Both deaths were shockers
that came out of nowhere. But Elvis wasn't a suspected pedophile who
turned off a lot of his fans with some high profile trials.
When Elvis died... there was shock and an outpouring of grief and
disbelief across North America and the world. Mickey J has his
fans... but I would guess most have his Thriller era in their memory
banks (and cd players Michael)... and just think of that time when
they think of him. The last trial in 2005 i think lost him a lot of
his dedicated fan base.
Sure there is shock, but I doubt there will be the grief there was
for Elvis.
Last point... I have never owned Thriller. And I've always joked
that Michael Jackson can thank a then red hot Eddie Van Halen for
the guitar solo on Beat It that got it radio play on some of the
more mainstream and rock radio stations! There was a curiousity
factor with such a strange linking of two musicians. That airplay
sent the single and then the album into the stratosphere.
Blocked Senders list people... blocked senders!!!

P.S. Do you also call your customers "hockey pucks"?

Interesting! Those who disagree with your tactics are "whores" and
"pimps".You view your customers as "junkies" and "jerks". And even
following this "Don Rickles" school of marketing, you have managed
to sell $250,000 over 10 years time, a whopping $25,000 a YEAR (what
I sell in 3 days on average). Even more interesting!
Maybe, just maybe, there is a connection with why MoPo still has
only a few hundred members after 10 years (less than it had 7 or 8
years ago), and the fact that it is unmoderated and "anything goes".
Personally, I like to go to places where I won't be subjected to
people who lack any sense of decorum, but hey, that's just me, and
the rules are the rules. I just notice that lots of the people I
would like to hear from regularly, like Kirby, or Tony, or Ken, or
Joe Burtis or so many others (people with a huge knowledge about the
hobby) hardly ever or never post (and maybe 20 people DO regularly
post) and I wonder if there isn't a connection to that as well.
There's no need to debate whether rodxmorgan has the freedom to say
anything he wants to in a crowded theater, because this theater sure
ain't crowded.

(Yes, you all know who you are.) In the name of some obscure profit
motive, these pimps are the ones who are ruining the hobby, the
business, the industry, the mystique. Now the whole world knows
that we are merely selling toilet paper to collector/junkies. And
values continue to plummet.
150,000 vintage lobbys for free. Sales to date: $250k. 3-5% of
the stock has been diminished, without discounting a single sale;
and without depleting the gold and platinum titles. Jerks!
