Christian Bale was a superb juvenile actor. "Empire of the Sun" was
his first film. In the documentary made during the filming, Bale is crawling
through a swampy spot near the camp's fences avoiding the armed guards.
Spielberg remarks to one of his assistants, "This kid's a Steve McQueen."
According to Bale, he hated the after-filming hype and used to hide in
restrooms to avoid press people and panting young fans.

Bale subsequently gave an excellent performance as a young squire in
Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V." His "dead" body is carried across the bloody
battlefield by Branagh as King Harry in one of the most amazing tracking shots
in late-20th-Century cinema.

He is also an amazingly taciturn Jim Hawkins in Fraser Heston's
excellent (where's the damned DVD?!!) "Treasure Island"-- very faithful to the
book and with a surprisingly effective performance by Chuck Heston himself as
Long John Silver.

These films helped make Bale the most searched "cult" actor on the
internet throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s.

It's the strength of these juvenile performances that make me expect
that one day Bale will live up to his potential, put the guns and the cape down
and give ANOTHER Oscar-worthy performance -- he should have had one for
"Empire..."-- in something besides flashy special effects extravaganzas. (And,
yes, I think he's teriffic as Batman/Bruce Wayne.)

Christian Bale? I didn't know that was him as a child. I loved
that film! My first VCR was a Sony Beta and it had stereo sound - VHS did not
it at that time, and it came with a demo tape to show off the stereo sound and
included a clip from Empire of the Sun.

"EMPIRE OF THE SUN" (1987-- Spielberg, directing
Christian Bale in possibly the greatest performance by a child actor ever!)

most of our favorite films that we watch over and
over, again, share tons of loyalty by others. (CASABLANCA, DOUBLE INDEMNITY,
VERTIGO, etc. is on everyone's list.)

BUT, what is a favorite film of your that you need to
defend? that is, what film do you believe is GREAT but lacks the enthusiasm of
others?

my answer is THE PARADINE CASE.
