I have to admit *is* a bit exciting being able to watch the Live
auctions at Heritage, even if I can't afford these kind of prices (not
to mention the buyer's premiums). For some reason there seemed to be a
lot of interest in lobby cards today, with many going way above their
reserves. While the one sheets and inserts did as pretty much as
expected (versus their estimated values), one oddity was a really nice
1-sheet of INVASION OF THE SAUCER MEN which was only bid to about half
of its estimated value of $8,000. Yet the lobby cards for that title did
very well. What, everyone with big bucks already has their 1-sheet?
I was particularly surprised at the price for the ATTACK OF THE 50-FOOT
WOMAN 1-sheet: $6,872. I guess sex still sells.
As for DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL... what the heck? The title card goes
for $6,275 (when the estimate was only $2,000)? And the most of rest of
the cards went way over their estimates as well. And we all know
Heritage's estimates ain't low ball to start with. So, apparently if you
want to put together a set of 8 lobby cards for this film, you better
set aside at least $10,000 (and pray for a bargain)?
From this auction you'd never know there was a global recession on.
