Bruce,
Unfortunately when it comes to their own personal name, people can
insist it be pronounced however they want. Mine is "James" and everyone
knows how that is pronounced, but if I want to, I can tell people, "No,
my name is pronounced like "Ramses with a J". And if I'm a celebrity, I
may be able to make it stick (with the media at least).
I've always felt that it is perfectly acceptable for people to use
commonly accepted pronunciation, no matter what the person says they
want: Dana is pronounced "Day-nah". If it is spelled D-a-n-a, then
that's how it's supposed to be pronounced. You want it pronounced
differently, then spell it different. Cuba is pronounced "Que-bah", but
only if English is your native language, because in other parts of the
world (perhaps even in Cuba itself), the word *is* pronounced "Koo-bah".
But I figure if someone wanted their kid to be called "Kooba" then
that's how they should have spelled it. Or Kuba.
The real problem, of course, is that the English language is such a
mongrel compilation from all previous languages... some "foreign" words
commonly used in English are pronounced in their original "foreign" way,
while others (from the same "foreign" language) are commonly spoken with
a very different anglicized pronunciation. How is anyone supposed to know?

I always "naturally" assumed that Dana Wynter's first name was
pronounced like Dana Andrew's first name, but I was watching old
re-runs of What's My Line and To Tell the Truth, and in both she was
called by name several times, and it was pronounced "Donna" each time.
Are there other celebrities any of you can think of where most people
generally mispronounce their name? And is Cuba Gooding Jr"s first name
pronounced like the country or "Koo-bah"? And will he ever make
another good movie?
