Wilder said the irritations between himself and Chandler came to a head when
the office they were working in got stuffy and Wilder told Chandler to "open
the window." But it irked Chandler because he didn't say "open the window,
PLEASE."
I love these stories. Obviously, when you've got talents of this calibre
working in such close quarters there is bound to be friction.
They never worked together again, but given that Double Indemnity is one of
my all-time favorite movies, I'm just glad they worked together ONCE! :-)

Chandler's disdain for Billy Wilder is legendary and he used him as a
character in Long Goodbye
Chandler was a London-taught gentleman and disliked among other things,
Wilder's womanizing which he viewed as derogatory behavior. In turn,
Wilder would try to embarrass Chandler when he was working in the studio
office.
Chandler also had similar feelings about Hitchcock
Chandler thought of Cain as a writer of pornography and complained that he
had no morals
Ultimately, it was Chandler's feelings about Hollywood stance toward
writers coupled with what Chandler saw as debauchery that led to no
further work after Strangers on a Train
among Chandler's complaints of Wilder were that Wilder walked around the
office swishing a malaca cane (which Chandler injected into Long Goodbye),
Wilder too frequent phonecalls from women and Wilder did not say "please".
This was in addition to Wilder essentially "looking over Chandler's
shoulder as he worked" which irked him to no end.
Eventually Chandler stopped coming to the office and after three days
finally returned with a list of demands against Wilder's interference -
which he got. The script was completed and both Chandler and Wilder vowed
never to work together again.
the best book on Chandler's hollywood work is "Raymond Chandler in
Hollywood" by Al Clark.

An aside: Just finished reading Cameron Crowe's excellent book of
interviews with Wilder (highly recommended).
Billy and Chandler didn't get along. According to Billy, the writing got
in the way of Chandler's drinking. Also, Chandler didn't like the source
material from James M. Cain, whom he had no respect for.
I'm a fan of all three and find it interesting that none of these guys got
along!

Just a cameo, but the recently discovered appearance of Chandler in
Double Indemnity is pretty sweet.
