Okay, excluding the recent spate of bogus cards from the Bernie Madoff
of Universal Horror (and a couple of MARK OF THE VAMPIREs thrown in for
seasoning). What are the records for lobby cards? Arguably on a per square
inch basis they confound belief at times. Figure a lobby card is 14% the
size of a onesheet well do the math regarding the few I have listed if
that pricing extrapolated equally to their onesheet.
I do know of a WIZARD OF OZ title card selling for 15,000.00 about three
years ago and even more impressive, a PUBLIC ENEMY scene card (Cagney
shoving that infamous grapefruit into the face of Mae Clarke) sold privately
for $25,000.00. Further, I had the great privilege of brokering a CALIGARI
CARD and a WHITE ZOMBIE CARD each North of 11 grand but are their any
others that people can recollect?
Certainly I am aware of sets of lobby cards hitting 50,000.00, 80,000.00
and some very recently a bit higher, but I am talking single cards. When
you think of a rectangular piece of paper not even large enough to use as a
placemat, it does give one pause........and don't even get me started on
mini-window cards!
But then again, what is the size of a T-206 Honus Wagner card with a
Piedmont tobacco company back. ...
