Hello Folks.. well I know afew the people at the Library of Congress ,
and the Smithsonian, and some other archivists that specialize in Film .
The paper posters I would suggest some of the Best are people Like Morrie
and Sue and Ed Poole and Rudy, and various dealers like Ron Borst, and
Steven Fishler and Rich, Bruce
and there are many that could contribute.
How it would need to work from a legal aspect is be professional
Opinions, as the legal exposure could be
tremendous like in the recent events,
The comic and Toy industry collectables started the gradeing system as
did Overstreet Guide and if you think when John Kisch made the almanac
it was to follow trends and prices from all sectors.
Yet because of the internet and aution houses the price system has
become almost obselete.
Now this advent of forged posters and with digital printing and the
incentive to recreate the posters verbatim, Its a real headache... Heck
people can not aggree on 70s 80s Inserts as the Minty white theaorys
still exsist.
Fact is there are people always trying to pass off reprints as
originals.. for years.... To me it doesnt seem
very hard to define the ones that were from 20s-40s as the paper stock
on 1 sheets was aa certain feel and
content. The 30 x40s and card stock titles are slightly harder to
determine as the paper was similar for years
until the enamal coated stock came out in the late 60s 70s...
As far as determining authentic poster If a group of recognized dealers
and collectors could by internet
create a List of telltale criteria and off a Juried opinion and have a
demographic area associate view in person the items in question or have
a touring group of dealer professional similar to people on MOPO it could
75-90 % give certainty to the items criteria and provenance. Tod Frietag
and Fishler and other owners could be a vast resource for comparisons.
The linenbackers and Museums and studios .. could do similar to the NSS
numbers Bruce has and what the pooles have and others could contribute
to a large depository of Info that could be maintained by a Libray like
the Margret Herrick Library of the AMPAS. Perhaps a GRANT could be
received to catalog all the data.
The group of Opinions could be a Pseudo " Poster verification
organization " made up of collectors and
dealers.. Then for a fee the auction houses could get a written OPINION
on the validity of the posters.
Also from forensics aspeact there could be some paper specialist
scientific groups put on retainer to verify
age and organic aspects of the materials.
The US mint probably has some of the best experst on paper and ink in
the world. so I would get someon there on retainer to oversea that
aspect.. A booklet could be created to help people disern all aspects of the
Poster and art forgery biz and what to look for,, a checklist of sorts.
If you dont like that Idea.. how about get a 57 magnum Clint eastwood
Gun and when someone brings a poster in say " Do ya feel Lucky punk?
Is the poster real??? that might save some time and money :::)
all you will need is a Mop to clean up the poo poo.
dont listen to me...:)

you are right on the money.. we need a Smithsonian to do the work as
they have a gathering of experts and we need an Indian tracker on
this.. No one person has the skills needed to resolve this

Sorry, Rich.
Look, there is obviously an opening for a niche business here and
this list has much of the intense knowledge that's required. Also,
somewhere on this list, is the funding that will be needed. A
gathering of great talents and equipment will be essential to
success. Necessity is the mother of invention.
Do you remember in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when they
robbed Mr. Merryweather (whatever the name, they robbed the wrong
guy) and he gathered all the best lawmen and a kicka** Native
American tracker and they followed them relentlessly? It worked.
They finally got Butch and Sundance.
