Steve,
I watched CASABLANCA in both Blu ray & HD formats, and it was
spectacular in both. It recaptured that old feeling of seeing a crisp
new B & W print of a first-run feature on a big screen back in the day.
There is much more clarity and depth to the image than with a standard
DVD(I actually thought the HD transfer was superior, but if I'm not
careful, I'll start sounding like one of those
Whatever-Happened-to-Laser-Disc guys...you know, the ones with the
sandwich boards, the long robes, and the white zealot beards? ;-) )
there's a lot of talk about "grain" being important on the older films,
but there's much more to the image than that. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN in Blu
Ray blows, for instance. The graininess is so exaggerated it's downright
annoying. THE GODFATHER on the other hand has a beautifully textured,
nuanced image in Blu Ray. Bottom line; I think it's really worth getting
a Blu ray player. If you have a few extra bucks and want the best, get
the new Oppo Blu-Ray. I don't have one, (I have a Panasonic BD 30, which
gives me a lot of bang for the buck) but I've seen 'em, and it's a
killer system. You can get it modded so it's region-free too. Prices in
general are coming down, down, down, and this Xmas should be an ideal
time to grab a player. Check Amazon; I got a great deal on my BD 30 last
year with free DVDs, a rebate, and all kinds of cool stuff.
GONE WITH THE WIND should be mega-bitchin'. Anyone checked out WIZARD OF
OZ in Blu ray yet?

PS-true geek confession....I really am loving my obsolete HD player. A
lot. Discs are 3 or 4 bucks, they look & sound as good or better than
blu-ray, and I'm building a great library for cheeeeeap. I just got a
player with 11 HD DVDs for 75 bucks on Ebay after my first player
developed problems. I picked up the PLANET EARTH box set in HD for 20
bucks brand new, and it is just mind boggling.
Don't have a Blu-Ray player yet......have been toying with the idea
of making the plunge. I keep hearing its a kind of stop-gap to the
time in the near future when
physical discs will be obsolete and hi-def digital downloads will be THE
way to watch movies. Regardless, I still like having a physical disc
(and packaging which more and more is incorporating the film posters).
My hesitancy to take the "Blu-Ray plunge" is because my interest
is primarily in films up through the 1950's and there are relatively
few of those on Blu-Ray at this time (and they keep churning most out
only on DVD). However, CASABLANCA is on Blu-Ray and that is tempting
(anyone seen it yet in that format?). GONE WITH THE WIND is coming
this holiday season.....that might make me take the plunge.
Steve
might make me jump in!

Subject: [MOPO] QUO VADIS (1951) on Blu-Ray
Watched this disc last night. Blu-Ray will be a revelation for non-
wide screen
movies as well as the widescreen films. This film, which was standard
aspect
ratio, is spectacularly sharp and colorful. The subject matter may
not be
to everyone's liking, but I'm ready for more old films in Blu-Ray. I
also
recently watched GIGI in Blu-Ray and I can recommend it.
