James,

I would hope after ALL THIS, will be the OPPORTUNITY to capitalize on this experience and make us ALL much smarter in detecting fakes.  I have also collected and sold high end autographs for 30 years and you can imagine the “forgery” component with autographs, YIKES!.  But, I can also tell you what NON-autograph collectors (and forgers) don’t understand.  And, that is after many years of collecting , studying and analyzing signatures you gain a “sixth sense” of a genuine example, Fake items just don’t have the “it” factor.  Just like Sean Linenback picked up on the “Son If Frank” lobby fake.  It is the same with art.  Many years ago I asked a Picasso expert, “how do you know” , he turned to me and said one word, “experience”.  I didn’t quite understand what he meant at the time, but I do now.  It is the SAME with movie posters. I can assure you if someone tried to peddle a VINTAGE movie poster or lobby card with AGE-related manipulations I am 99.9% sure I would pick it up, and I will volunteer to be a guinea pig for such a test any time.   I did a similar test at an autograph analysis event a couple years ago and scored 100%.

So from the “fake” movie poster experience I would expect (and hope) the resulting product will be a detailed manual, video, webinar, etc demonstrating advanced techniques to detect these fakes.  From what I saw from the original LAMP posting was some fairly blatant evidence (if you are looking for it) to detect the poster and lobby card "manipulations".      I say if after all this, we let a scenario like you mention below slip by, then we will be a bunch of knuckleheads for letting this "opportunity" go to waste.   It will all depend on HOW as a group we take advantage of we what have learned and educate each other .  If we just disperse and go our separate ways , and walk away from the power of collective knowledge and networking, we will have NO ONE else to blame but ourselves.    I surely don't think having a "not going to trust the world" approach will benefit anyone, on the contrary.  Just my 2 cents.

Kevin,

C'mon... that's the next move for the forgers: Instead of creating pristine fakes, create "distressed" fakes that look "unrestored" with all kinds of wrinkles, pin holes and a few tape stains. Maybe not worth quite as much as the pristine fakes, but still worth Big Bucks and less-likely to be ever-so-carefully scrutinized.

No, now just buy Uniersal that has pinholes, aged tape stains, corner tears, age related coloring, well beat up stuff. At least it's real. like this Wolfman.  Then I'll leave it up to the new owner if he/she wants to restore it.

This just goes to show how deeply the "virus" of these fakes have permeated the market and the hobby.    When a highly respected operation like Bruce's can be taken in (at least through the duration of the auction) there really does not seem to be any absolute venue for purchasing Universal horror material without some concerns.   I applaud Bruce in making this known in a transparent public way. It certainly does not give eMovieposter a black eye, but it does underscore the necessity for vigilance in this sector of the poster world.
I'm curious if anyone who collected the Universal Horror material has backed off since the problem of the fakes arose.
