Goodness, I've been so swamped lately that I missed this very sad news. I
thought she was marvellous - simply, marvellous.

A couple of years ago AFI showed Spartacus at the Cinerama Dome and Kirk
Douglas was the guest who spoke before the film. He had so many nice things to
say about Jean Simmons and I imagined "why not". You just couldn't take your
eyes off of her when she was on the screen. I remember seeing her for the first
time in Young Bess when I was little watching old movies on the Saturday
matinee. I remember then thinking how beautiful she was and her voice was so
soft and pure. She was a strong force in everything she did. She did a film
with Rock Hudson called "This Earth is Mine", one of my favorites of her
"little films". I also loved her in the TV saga Thorn Birds. Even in her mid-
50's, she was still beautiful. She was indeed a class act.

I adored her in Black Narcissus. I was so lucky to have met her several years
ago at a screening of Howl's Moving Castle. She was lively, lovely and so
kind. I gushed and she was thrilled about how much I knew about her. A class
act she was. She's in the heavens charming everyone for sure.

My favorite film of hers is the forgotten gem, ALL THE WAY HOME from 1960. It
also starred Robert Preston. A nice quiet picture which is rarely if ever shown
anymore.

Jean Simmons, a radiant British actress who as a teenager appeared opposite
Laurence Olivier in "Hamlet" and emerged a star whose career flourished in the
1950s and 1960s in such films as "Guys and Dolls, "Elmer Gantry" and
"Spartacus," has died. She was 80.
