I attended the Oscars almost every year from 1982 until 1992. Got to see both Bob Hope and Johnny Carson host. Carson was my favorite because of the stuff he'd do during commercial breaks.
I liked the Dorothy Chandler far better than the Shrine because the DCP had a bar area downstairs where most winners would hang after leaving the press area. I'd generally stay there to chat-up the greats. One of my fondest memories is of Jack Lemon on my first year to attend. He was quite miffed that they had chosen not to open the bar that year. Needless to say, by the 3rd commercial break the bar was open and he was a very satisfied customer. When the bar finally opened I stood in line for a drink behind Leslie Bricusse, who had just won for Victor/Victoria. I didn't realize who he was until we got to the bar, where he slide to his left to give me room to order. After he did so, he plunked down this amazing statue on the bar. I was wide-eyed. He said, you want to hold it? Go ahead. It was the first time I'd held and Oscar. Man, was I on cloud nine!
