I agree with Bruce pretty much. Of course I also have some agreement with Neil
but it really gets to a different direction to me. I say that none of
the current authentication procedures of anyone can do anything more
than give an "opinion" for most material because none of them can
what is totally necessary for a correct & valuable authentication
certificate to have meaning: that chemical analysis of the paper &
inks must happen to really provide a meaningful authentication for
most items. That's in addition to having such things as an image
database of 100/200/300 times magnifications of both authentic for
reference & known forgeries for a different reference. You're talking
about multiple sample images of each posters from specific points,
repetitively for many authentic examples as well as databases of all
kinds of paper printed during the past 110 years, different ink
analysis and on and on, much like a CSI lab has on tires, sneakers,
gun riflings. That is a true lab run by people educated in such
matters. You need to have a database of all reproductions, like S2,
MovieGoods, the guys who do those full size top quality inserts so
when one comes around, you know
Look, the lobby cards are easy to authenticate. if you can peel a
contemporary sheet of paper from the back of a lobby card or a window
card.. that's an obvious fake. But what if the forger was more
sophisticated and used an original lithography press on vintage paper
with hand mixed inks made from the same types of dyes etc that were
used 50 or 100 years ago?? What if instead of gluing the top sheet to
the lobby card back, if you used a lobby card back to print on (I
can. I tried already) and a hi pressure press that does not need glue
to merge the layers?
Also, once any of the forged one sheets were linenbacked, that is
different than the lobby card forgeries and more difficult to determine
Take a look at Sean's response.. he didn't say he wouldn't buy any
when he was offered because he thought they were fake - he said he
thought they were "Frankencards" built from the dead corpses of other
cards. This material fooled everyone on some level including many top experts
very simply.. I don't think anyone in the hobby is 100% qualified to
truly authenticate 100% of the forgeries.. Period

Neil,
I was not directing my message at you, only the inevitable
'follow-up" love letters to John Davis that are sure to follow your
post. The guy made a serious blunder, but he could do a lot of good
for the hobby. I wish everyone would save their hostility for the
truly bad guys out there, the ones who make fakes (expensive and
inexpensive) and pass them off as real.

hello bruce, i'm sorry you feel that it is unacceptable of me to
point out that someone - who has written an open letter to MOPO
making a definitive claim that they are no longer in the
authentication business - is still in the authentication business.

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" comes to mind.
SEAN, put that rock down right now!

hi all
i don't know if any of you remember john davis' Dracula mea culpa of
October 1st 2009 where he said that he accepts "100% of all blame
for my mistake, and will gladly reject any more requests for
authentications. I sincerely apologize for any and all harm that I
have caused. And promise that it will not happen again because I
will no longer offer authentication service, please give me a few
days to change my web site..." (full email below).
i just glanced at his site and saw that there were at least a dozen
'authentication reports' so far in 2010, including - for those
interested in irony - a report on a Dracula 1951R 1sh! this poster
was found to be authentic and given a clean bill of health.
and so were all the other posters.
i admire a man who enjoys his work as much as john davis.

It is absolutely true that I made an unfortunate mistake in my
determination of authenticity of the Dracula poster. This was an
honest mistake born of my ignorance of S2 reproductions and my lack
of experience with the original Dracula poster. Joe Maddalena was in
no way guilty of any wrong doing. His auction catalog was predicated
on my expertise and I alone was fooled. I gladly accept 100% of all
blame for my mistake, and will gladly reject any more requests for
authentications.
I sincerely apologize for any and all harm that I have caused. And
promise that it will not happen again because I will no longer offer
authentication service, please give me a few days to change my web
site and to return all the new fakes that came in this week.
Sincerely,
John A. Davis
