Jeff-- I'm not disagreeing with you. I agree 100%! But Ken Burns makes DOCUMENTARIES!! Not "Bio-pics" which are essentially dramatically-recreated entertainments. That's what I meant. Joe

To: "Joseph Bonelli" <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, February 21, 2010, 12:30 AM Joe, ALL Hollywood biopics are enhanced, dramatically.. not most. the glitz, glamour, spectacle--whether it be Doris Day or Streisand-- ALL are in enhanced-drama/musicals made in Hollywood. As was mentioned earlier... if one wants a true bio-pic.. thats where the real bio films shine.. Kevin Burns makes his films brilliantly. I'd say "Love Me or Leave Me" fits the musical bio-pic beautifully. Terrific music and production values, wonderful performances from Day (her best, I'd say) and Cagney (over the top but, whaddya hear, whaddya say)!! "Funny Girl," like "Gypsy," was a Broadway musical brought to the screen rather than a straight bio-pic. And as teriffic as Barbra was in the film, her performance on Broadway (I luckily saw it twice!) topped it, believe me!! In the flesh will always top on the screen-- with a powerhouse performer like that! I admit (sadly) to have never seen "The Helen Morgan Story" but I can live without "The Jolson Story." He was a powerful entertainer but I can get plenty enough Jolie in my copy of "The Jazz Singer." Oh-- I agree with folks about "La Bamba" and "The Buddy Holly Story"--- both terrific pictures with outstanding performances from the leads! Joe B PS-- Frankly, I hope the "Frank" bio-pic is just talk. I can't see it working. And the "new generation" could give less of a damn about it! Of couse, it might make for a more interesting Oscar show next year -- than this. --- On Sat, 2/20/10, Franc <[email protected]> wrote: From: Franc <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [MOPO] What WERE the best film biographies of popular singers? To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, February 20, 2010, 7:47 PM Funny Girl, Love or Leave Me. The Helen Morgan Story and Jolson Story are all highly enjoyable musical films but I don't know if I'd call them great "biographies". A lot of those films are fictional. I also don't know if your question is a fair one: does the world need more horror films or detective films or sci-fi films or love stories or porno? The world needs good films, no matter the genre. FRANC P.S. Add La Bamba to the list. -----Original Message----- From: MoPo List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bruce Hershenson Sent: Saturday, February 20, 2010 1:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MOPO] What WERE the best film biographies of popular singers? All this talk about a Sinatra movie biography got me wondering if there is really a need for more biographies of great pop singers. What WERE the best film biographies of popular singers?
