Bruce - I saw it in 3-D. After seeing the trailer I was hoping for a tremendous experience. I felt exactly as you did.
I believe the audience I saw it with also had some let down as there was little or no reaction when the movie was over. People just left. No one lingered. Lingering is always a good sign. I was hard pressed to explain to people how I felt about it. I think I'll use your, " it was no Edward Scissorhands, but it was also no Planet of the Apes" analogy. I also find that Burton's movies always look too dark for my taste. If you're going to spend that much money let's see what you spent it on. I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp, and yet I thought he was the least interesting part of the movie (although I was not as disappointed by him in this as I was by his performance in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). The weird thing they did with his eyes was distracting, and since you express a lot of emotion with your eyes, it hurt that way too. I thought the lead actress was quite good. If they wanted to make "The Gwynneth Paltrow Story", she would make an excellent choice to play the lead.
