Further to this conversation, I contacted one of the main people with MGM
responsible for the re-launch campaign, who by the way is a major poster
collector and his reaction upon seeing it was as follows.

The term re-issue is problematic dealing with this poster.
The STARCHILD - ULTIMATE TRIP campaign was created for the re-launch of the
film in 1969.

The film was in continuous release, playing in various original engagements and
formats from 1968 through 1969 and probably 1970 and in some cities, beyond.

The STAR CHILD - ULTIMATE TRIP campaign was adapted from the 1969 re-launch for
all future 2001 showings as it captured the phenomenon and was very successful.

This poster --which I have never seen before -- was probably used for whatever
engagements were happening in 1970. As only STAR CHILD one-sheets were printed
for the re-launch, the other sizes were printed once we saw how extensive the
campaign would be applied.

Ordinarily, all studios had a deal with NSS to print the various sizes that
exhibitors could order -- OS; HS INSERT, lobbies, etc. This half-sheet would be
the first one printed in that size using the THE STAR CHILD campaign."

Subject: Re: [MOPO] R70 2001 US 1/2 SHEET Selling For $2390 at Heritage? AM I

The opening bid still seems awfully high to me. But when it comes down to
it, it's all a matter of supply and demand, anyway. If this 1/2 sheet appears
that infrequently, I guess I shouldn't be that surprised with the auction's
outcome. Whoever had the poster on consignment with Heritage definitely didn't
want to take the slightest chance that it sell for less that $2000, I guess..
