[MOPO] What is/was the "Culver Picture Service"?

Anyone know anything about the Culver Picture Service?  Their 
Hollywood photos seems to be pretty distinctive, in the plastic with 
the yellow descriptive headings at the top.  I think Heritage sold a 
bunch of them in a special auction not too long ago.

I'm wondering what the "Culver Picture Service" is/was exactly, where 
their photos came from and where they are now.  Any insights?
