from the article:

In the mid-1970s, cinema giant Hoyts planned to demolish the Regent but was met with fierce opposition when the Save the Regent campaign was launch.

A compromise was reached, with the company agreeing to keep the facade, foyer and staircase in return for demolishing the grand auditorium theatre.

It was replaced by a four-cinema complex, serviced by the original front of house and main foyer.

The auditorium was once considered one of the largest in the Commonwealth.

It featured a stage, movie screen, modern light and seating for more than 2500 patrons.

Oh! I didn't realize that!!

I guess that's why they showed old photos of the auditorium.

What a travesty... for what remains of the facade and front box office area to not be saved and preserved is truly a loss for the city. And that the grand, original auditorium was demolished years ago, and replaced with a 4-plex was the larger loss.

Sad.

Brisbane's historic Regent Cinema will be closing today for redevelopment. Yet another of Australia's magnificent cinemas lost forever. This is a real
tragedy and another example of greed from developers and stupidty of
policticians.
