Dave, I couldn't find any newspaper advertisements later than 1943, and the
'40s dates are very sporadic, suggesting a disorganized (roadshow)
"re-release."  The main release period where it's titled "GWSs" is from '36 to
'39, obviously corresponding to it's creation and first release.

Also, JD Kendis was the film's original producer, and he and Jay Dee Kay (his
production company and the producers of the film) are also prominently
mentioned on the TC - something that was rarely (never?) done on re-releases or
roadshow presentations, where most production credits were stripped off
advertising material.

Finally, I think the general style of the cards is definitely '30s vs. '40s.

Granted, I don't have a pb or anything and it's all pretty circumstantial, it's
just that there's absolutely nothing to suggest that these are a later
release.  If they were mine, I'd be completely satisfied they're original
release.

HTH.

Thanks for that, Peter. Just to clarify: Are you saying this set is likely from
the original release because the movie was later retitled "The Vice Racket"?
Bruce has a WC with that title on it from a later re-release. Obviously I would
be delighted if this turns out to be a rare original release set.

Dave,

They're almost certainly from the first release.  It played from late '36 into
'39 and then sporadically into the early '40s (probably as a states
rights/roadshow release) as "Gambling With Souls."

Hi, folks:

I just acquired a lobby set for the 1936 exploitation flick Gambling With
Souls. I believe it's for a re-release, possibly 1940s, but that's only based
on my comparing the title art to the art on the original release 1-sheets and
WCs pictured in Bruce's archives. (According to the databases, Bruce has never
sold any lobbies for the title and Heritage has never sold anything from it.)

Here's the title card:

If anyone has any clue as to the year of release, please let me know.

Btw, as it happens, the tc is the only card in the set with any condition
issues, the other seven cards are pristine!

Thanks for any help,
Dave
