That was my first reaction as well. I tend to frown when I see an "expert" say something like "easily worth up to". Have to wonder if they like honey or maple syrup on their waffles.
And yes, unfortunately the dollar sign is usually more newsworthy (or at least attractive to readers - which kind of defines "newsworthy") than aesthetic considerations.
