I always do this on more expensive pieces and find it silly that dealers don't consider this. Why wouldn't you want a chance to have two happy customers and a lot of goodwill?
But of course i remember a few years back when one major collector sent me his want list and about 3-4 months later I called to tell him that i had finally picked up a couple of pieces on his list, he told me I was the first dealer he had ever sent the list to that actually contacted him outside of whatever they had in their existing inventory (and he had been collecting for many years). That one gesture has led to a lasting friendship and many more successful transactions.
